Trigger Warning: This book includes domestic violence, rape, suicidal ideation, and PTSD.If you're looking for a hot and steamy lesbian romance, this is NOT it. It is a story of an Iraq war veteran finding love and strength to deal with her mental illness in the guise of a romance novel.I'll start with why I took off a star. While I love the way the author's mind works in telling the storylines, her style of writing is not one I normally enjoy. She uses short sentences, has areas of poor grammar, and transitions between scenes are occasionally choppy. (Some of that may be formatting.). It reads like a teen novel which is not my usual go to genre.Now why I loved it! The author tackles complicated issues in a way that is non-threatening to the reader. The characters are well developed and I have become emotionally attached to them. Yes, I cried dammit. As soon as I get mad at someone's self-destructive or codependent behavior, she turns it and you see the other side. I find myself cheering, then getting mad, then hopeful, then crying, and then saying awwwww. It's a romance, so I know there's going to be a happy ending, but at times I just want them to walk away. Ugh!Yes, I bought the series. This is the second book I have read in it. I'm looking forward to seeing these characters as they come in and out of other books, or so I've heard. It is an easy read for all levels.I wrote this review at 2AM so I hope it makes sense.-Michael's Mom. Devin & Skyler. Wow! Devin sets her sights on Skyler and insinuates herself into her life. Devin, the 'fix-it' girl. The author writes her as caring but I read her as intrusive. Hacking Skyler's life to track her down and end up on her door step. Who does that? Not my book. I live with PTSD and it allows me to avoid/walk away from people like Devin. But Skyler didn't walk away. She drinks, a lot, and smokes like a chimney. The story's well written showing Skyler's decline through action sequences or dialogue. War is hell. Without sordid details the reader learns what happened. It's a book I couldn't put down. I definitely cried at some point. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
